Whether you are building a new ecommerce website or upgrading an existing website choosing the right payment gateway can have a major effect on your customer's online experience.
There are many different payment gatewaysout in the market and depending on where you are with your business can determine which payment gateway you are going to use. You may ask what does it matter what payment gateway I use they all do the same thing, well yes essentially they do but some payment gateways are inline solutions and some are hosted payment pages.
Inline solutions will keep your users on your website while they make their payment, the pages of the payment gateway will keep the same feel of your ecommerce solution and will keep your user on the website at all times, however these types of payment gateways will require you to gain a merchant ID from your bank as you are taking payment details on your website solution. Examples if these are Sage Pay, Barclays and our own Advansys e-payments.
Hosted payment pages are payment gateways that direct your user away from your ecommerce websitewhere they will then make the payment on the hosted page and will redirect them back to your site. These type of gateways mean that the customer will spend time away from your site, you won't be able to keep the design of your website throughout the payment process however as you are not taking confidential details on your site you will not need a merchant ID. Payment gateways such as PayPal, Nochex and Worldpay are examples of hosted payment page gateways.
