Twitter are having another go at making some serious money off their usually free service, releasing the concept of earlybird tweets. This is effectively a premium rate service to guarantee immediate exposure. Promoted Tweets of this kind will be shown to all users, not just those that follow the user who posted it.
This is a second push by the microblog site to garner some revenue from the service and it seems to be a pretty bold one. Part of the charm of twitter is that the posts are uninterrupted by marketing (although a large percentage of tweets these days are marketing messages) and it will be interesting to see the reactions by the user base to these promoted tweets.
If they do take off then this could be a valuable extra paid service to advertise your ecommerce website. Twitter has an extensive user base and this earlybird service would give you the ability to get the jump on marketing new product lines. This is especially interesting if you can get hold of the latest product lines from the Autumn Fair Trade show in September before your competitors and push new lines for an exclusive period.
